What is jicama?
Jicama is a root vegetable in the same family of legumes and taproots. It’s a starchy vegetable that looks a lot like celery root and turnips. Jicama packs a big crunch with a similar flavour palette to potatoes and is used in place of potatoes for low-carb diets. It’s important to only eat the root vegetable as the top part of the jicama plant could create toxic reactions.
If you're looking to make these air fryer jicama fries but aren't sure where to find jicama at the grocery store, you can usually find it in the international produce section. Keep an eye out for the area where the turnips, celery root and other root vegetables are. If you’re still having trouble finding it, you may need to look for it at a specialty grocery store.
Frequently Asked Questions
These jicama fries are made of two medium-sized jicama, olive oil, paprika, chili powder, garlic powder and salt.
This jicama fries air fryer recipe has just 30 grams of carbs per serving, which is about half the amount of carbs that potato fries have. They’re a great way to satisfy your fast-food cravings while still eating healthy.
Jicama has a very mild flavour, which makes it a great substitute for potatoes, especially when you’re making jicama fries. The slight taste that the jicama vegetable has is a sweeter and nuttier taste than potatoes but the texture of it is still starchy making it a great alternative to potatoes.
Storing and reheating
You can store any leftover jicama fries in the fridge for up to 5 days. The best way to reheat them is in the air fryer or the oven for about 10 minutes until they get nice and crispy. I wouldn’t recommend using the microwave, as they’ll get soggy, and no one wants soggy fries!
Freezing this recipe
You can definitely freeze this recipe, but I recommend freezing the raw jicama fries before baking them. Flash-freeze them on a parchment-lined baking sheet, then transfer them to a Ziploc bag and freeze for up to 3 months. When you’re ready to make your air fryer jicama fries, just add them to the air fryer and cook as normal or bake them in the oven.

I bought jicama for the first time this week. I’ve been looking forward to giving it a try. I purchased it prepackaged, which brings me to my next question. Do I skip Step 2 – microwaving step?
Taylor Stinson says
I think you still need to complete this step even if it’s pre-packaged.

Hi! Any idea if the Jicama fries can be done in the pressure cooker function of the Instant Pot instead of the microwave? Thanks!

I haven’t tried it myself but that is an interesting idea! I’m sure it would work, maybe it’s worth some testing 🙂
