Smoothie bowl tips & tricks
Here are some of my top tips and tricks for making smoothie bowls:
- Freeze your own fresh fruit: It's a great way to reduce food waste.
- Use a strong blender: You need something strong to get the best consistency. I like to use the Vitamix Ascent series.
- Don't over-blend: Make sure you're blending just until the ingredients are combined and your mixture has a nice thick consistency.
- Add granola: Make some homemade granola to add on top of your smoothie bowls!
Frequently asked questions
How do I make the smoothie bowl thick enough to hold toppings?
Use frozen fruit only, and limit the liquid to just a splash. Blend slowly, using a tamper or pausing to stir. If the mixture is too runny, add more frozen banana or fruit to thicken.
How do I stop my smoothie bowl from melting too quickly?
Serve it right after blending and use a chilled bowl if possible. Thicker bases made with less liquid will also hold their shape longer and keep the toppings from sinking.
Why does my smoothie bowl taste bland?
Overloading on ice or watery fruits like melon can dilute flavor. Stick to ripe frozen fruit, and consider adding natural flavor boosters like vanilla extract, cinnamon, or a small spoonful of nut butter.

How to store and reheat
- Make-ahead: Blend smoothie base, store separately, and assemble bowl just before serving.
- Store: Refrigerate smoothie base in airtight container for 1-2 days.
- Freeze and reheat: Freeze the smoothie base, thaw, blend if needed, then assemble your bowl.

Meal prep tools
- The Magic Bullet is great for making one or two smoothie bowls at a time.
- The Vitamix Ascent series is my fave though – it's self-cleaning so you aren't left with a ton of mess and it's perfect for if you're prepping 3-4 smoothie bowls at a time. It can tear through anything to make the smoothest smoothie, even ice!
- You could also use an immersion blender to make these smoothie bowls if that's what you have on hand.
