This Easy Homemade Frozen Yogurt is made with just 4 ingredients: bananas, berries, Greek yogurt and honey. It’s the perfect healthy treat!
Ingredients and substitutions
- Bananas – frozen mango would be a good substitute here.
- Plain Greek yogurt – I use plain full-fat Greek yogurt, but you can use vanilla Greek yogurt or even low-fat yogurt. For a vegan option, use coconut milk yogurt.
- Frozen fruit – I like to add frozen raspberries but you can use any frozen berry or fruit of your choice.
- Honey – maple syrup or agave syrup would also help sweeten your froyo.
Topping ideas
- Sprinkles – swap out the sprinkles for nuts or seeds.
- Shredded coconut – sweetened or unsweetened coconut would work.
- Chocolate chips – swap out for a swirl of nut butter, cookie butter or Nutella. You could also add on some chocolate or caramel syrup.
- Fresh fruit – blueberries, mango, pineapple or any other fruit would be so good on your frozen yogurt!

How to sweeten your frozen yogurt
There are a few different ways to sweeten your homemade frozen yogurt:
- Liquid sweeteners: Honey, maple syrup, agave syrup, molasses and Stevia drops are all great options for sweetening desserts to make them healthier. I used honey as a sweetener in this frozen yogurt recipe.
- Fruit sugars: Fruits that are good sources of natural sugar include bananas, dates, applesauce, pomegranate, cherries and mango. Banana is my sweetener of choice for this dessert. Not only does it offer sweetness, but it also helps to make the frozen yogurt thick and creamy. For extra sweetness, a thick consistency and vibrant colour, I add frozen raspberries.
- Refined sugars: You can also use traditional granulated white or brown sugar as a sweetener. However, keep in mind that because frozen yogurt doesn't have a cooked base like ice cream does, the sugar may not completely dissolve. This means that the yogurt may have a gritty texture.
Frequently Asked Questions
On its own, yogurt is full of protein, calcium and other healthy nutrients and vitamins, but frozen yogurt is not necessarily healthy. It’s healthier than dairy ice cream, but many store brands of frozen yogurt have refined sugar, high fructose corn syrup and other unhealthy ingredients in them. Making your own homemade frozen yogurt allows you to control the ingredients and makes this treat a lot healthier. My version of frozen yogurt is super healthy and uses only whole food ingredients so you can rest assured knowing you're making the healthiest version possible.
Frozen yogurt and ice cream may have a similar flavour and consistency, but the ingredients in frozen yogurt are different. Ice cream is made with milk, egg and sugar, whereas frozen yogurt is made of yogurt with natural sweeteners like berries.
If you find that your homemade frozen yogurt is icy after you pull it out of the freezer, it’s because you didn’t store it in an airtight container. Make sure to freeze your frozen yogurt in an airtight container with a tight-fitting lid or ice crystals will form over top.
Storing and serving frozen yogurt
Of course, you'll need to store your homemade frozen yogurt in the freezer. To prevent any ice crystals from forming, keep it in a container with a tight-fitting lid. Glass meal prep storage containers are perfect for this. You can also find plastic ice cream containers in kitchen specialty stores or online from places like Rubbermaid or Amazon.
The frozen yogurt will store well for about 3 months. I'm doubtful that it will last that long though! 😉 The consistency of the frozen yogurt will become harder the longer it stays in the freezer. To make serving easier, run your ice cream scoop under some hot tap water for a minute before scooping.

Recipe looks good. I am going to try it. Can you taste the bananas or do they just help thicken the frozen yogurt? I like bananas but sometimes they overpower a recipe.
Love your recipes – have made a few

Thank you so much Mary Lou! I personally found I didn’t taste the bananas, they are more there to add sweetness and thicken the yogurt. I hope you like it if you try it 🙂
