Tips & Variaitions
Here are a few simple tips and easy swaps to help make these cheeseburger fries perfect:
- Get crispy fries: Rinse potatoes until the water runs clear, then dry them really well before baking.
- Use frozen fries: Short on time? Swap the homemade fries for your favourite frozen fries.
- Switch the protein: Try ground turkey, ground chicken or plant-based protein instead of beef.
- Customize the toppings: Add bacon, pickled jalapeños, avocado, shredded lettuce or extra pickles.
- Make it spicy: Add hot sauce, spicy mayo or sliced fresh jalapeños.
- Try different cheese: Swap cheddar for mozzarella, Monterey Jack or your favourite blend.
Frequently asked questions
Are cheeseburger fries healthy?
They’re a more balanced option than grabbing a burger and fries from a fast-food restaurant, especially when you make them at home with extra-lean ground beef and fresh toppings. You have more control on what you add and how much. You can add other veggies too!
Can I use an airfryer to cook the fries instead?
Of course! I use the oven method since not everyone has an air fryer, but if you prefer you can cook the fries at 400°F for about 15–20 minutes turning half way. Make sure you don’t crowd the basket so they crisp up.
Can I use frozen fries for cheeseburger fries?
Yes! Frozen fries are a great shortcut. Cook them according to the package directions then add the cheese in the last two minutes then add your toppings.

Storing and reheating
Storing: Store leftover fries, ground beef and toppings separately in airtight containers in the fridge for up to 4 days. Keep the special sauce refrigerated separately.
Reheating: Reheat the fries and ground beef separately in the oven or air fryer until heated through and the fries are crisp again, then top with the cold toppings and sauce.
Freezing: Freeze the cooked ground beef separately in an airtight freezer-safe container or Stasher bag for up to 3 months. I don’t recommend freezing the assembled cheeseburger fries or fresh toppings.

Cheeseburger Fries
Equipment
- Glass bowls with lids for storing toppings
- Stasher bags to freeze leftover ground beef
Ingredients
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 2 large russet potatoes cut into fries
- 1 lb extra-lean ground beef
- 1 cup cheddar cheese grated
- 1 large tomato diced
- 1 cup romaine lettuce washed and chopped
- 1 yellow onion diced
- 2 large pickles sliced
Special sauce
- 1/4 cup sour cream
- 2 tbsp light mayo
- 1 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tbsp dijon mustard or regular mustard
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425 F. Wash potatoes and cut into fries, then rinse under cold water until water runs clear to remove starch. Pat potatoes dry with a clean towel or paper towel, then line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Add fries to baking sheets, then toss with olive oil and season with salt. Spread fries across both baking sheets evenly, ensuring fries are in an even layer. Bake for 12-15 minutes per side until fries are crispy.
- While fries cook, heat a large skillet over medium-high heat then add ground beef, crumbling with a spatula and seasoning with salt & pepper. Cook for 7-8 minutes until cooked through then remove from heat.
- While beef cooks, prepare cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and onions, then mix sauce ingredients together in a bowl.
- OPTIONAL BONUS STEP: remove beef from the skillet then add a bit more olive oil and diced onions, seasoning with salt and pepper. Cook for 5 minutes until onions are browned and softened then remove from heat.
- In the last 2 minutes of cook time, add grated cheese to the fries and cook until just melted.
- Remove fries from the oven, top with ground beef, veggies and sauce, then serve and enjoy!
