These Taco Bell Nacho Fries, aka fries supreme, are smothered in delicious nacho cheese, pico de gallo, ground beef and sour cream.

Can I make a confession? Taco Bell is my absolute FAVOURITE fast food restaurant. I can’t get enough of their fries supreme (sadly, they’re only available in Canada) but I’ve also tried the Nacho Fries and they’re insane. I had to make my own version!
Why you’ll love this recipe
- Better ingredients: They taste just like the Taco Bell version, but are made with better-for-you ingredients.
- Customize your toppings: Add on any toppings of your choice to customize your fries!
Ingredients and substitutions
- Extra-lean ground beef โ ground turkey or shredded chicken would also work.
- Taco seasoning โ make your own or use a store-bought blend.
- Frozen fries โ I like using spicy fries, but plain fries will work too.
- Pico de gallo โ use diced tomatoes or jarred salsa instead.
- Scallions โ white or red onion would also be good.
- Sour cream โ use low-fat sour cream or plain Greek yogurt to cut the calories.
Nacho cheese sauce
- Salted butter โ unsalted butter will work, but you’ll need to add extra salt.
- Flour โ gluten-free flour or cornstarch would also work.
- Pickled jalapeno peppers โ leave these off if you donโt like spice.
- Chili powder โ make your own using a blend of cumin, paprika and cayenne.
- Milk โ whole milk or half and half will make the thickest sauce.
- Cheese slices โ use 6 oz. Velveeta or 3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese instead.

Recipe tips and variations
Here are a few tips to help you get the crispiest fries and boldest flavour, plus some easy ways to mix it up:
- Use an air fryer or bake for a lighter option: Skip the deep-frying. Bake or air fry for crispiness with less oil.
- Season while hot: Toss the fries with seasoning right after cooking so it sticks better.
- Turn it into loaded fries: Add toppings like taco meat, green onions, jalapeรฑos, sour cream or guac for a meal-style version.
- Switch up the seasoning: Try taco seasoning, Cajun spice or chipotle powder for a fun twist.
- Try other meat: Use ground turkey, shredded chicken or leftover chicken.
- Vegetarian option: Use black beans or refried beans for a vegetarian option.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to peel the potatoes first?
Itโs totally up to you. Peeling gives a smoother texture, while keeping the skin adds extra flavour and fibre.
Can I make these vegan?
If you want to make these fries vegan, swap out the ground beef for beans or veggies, skip the sour cream and use shredded vegan cheese.
Why are Nacho Fries so popular?
I love Nacho fries because of their bold flavour. They’re so craveable! Theyโre a fun twist on a classic side and hit the sweet spot between fast food comfort and spicy snack.

What to serve with this dish
These nacho fries are crave-worthy on their own, but you can turn them into a full meal or snack spread with these tasty sides:
- Beef tacos or crunchwraps
- Guacamole or salsa
- Buffalo chicken wraps or quesadillas
How to store and reheat
Make ahead: Prep the fries, toppings and cheese sauce in advance, but store them separately to keep everything fresh.
Store: Keep all components in separate containers in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Reheat: Reheat fries in the oven or air fryer for crispiness. Warm the cheese sauce slowly on the stovetop over medium-low heat to prevent separation.
Freeze and reheat from frozen: Freeze the cooked fries and cheese sauce separately for up to 1 month. Thaw overnight, then reheat in the oven or on the stove as usual.

I would say that it gets four starts if nothing else for the article itself.
It’s thorough, articulate and thoughftul – meaning it provides not only a home made recipe though one that has alternative ingredient options and even attention to detail such as how to reheat, reuse the food.
It’s absolutely true that some dishes lose their texture and consistency when they sit for a period of time.
Example? anything with tortillas. Leave them piled under that meat and sauce and soggy they will go. The fries are no different.
Same with a burger that has sauce. It gets soaked into the bun, and absorbed/lost. By the time you melt it out of there, you’ve microwaved the bread into Chernobyl levels or radiation.
And what of the vegetables? Who wants hot soggy lettuce?
Excellent idea to serve them separately.
Thank you for the write up
P.S. One start off because I am increasingly frustrated at seeing cheese sauces made by more or less melting a pre made product into a pot. If it has Velveeta, Cheese Whiz or anything processed, that’s cheating.
