These Homemade Greek Fries are a healthy dinner idea loaded with marinated chicken and Mediterranean-inspired toppings like tzatziki!
Ingredients and substitutions
- Chicken breast – chicken breast is the leaner meat but chicken thighs will also work (and might end up being juicier).
- Olive oil – use any neutral oil like sunflower oil, avocado oil or vegetable oil.
- Lemon juice – fresh lemon juice or bottled lemon juice will both work. If you're in a pinch, use lime juice.
- Garlic – fresh garlic or jarred minced garlic are both great options.
- Oregano – if you don't have dried oregano on hand, dried marjoram will also work.
- Salt & pepper – to taste.
- Mozzarella cheese – mozzarella is great at melting but feta has the most authentic Mediterranean taste.
Fries
- Russet potatoes – high-starch potatoes are best for fries, so if you don't have russet potatoes, I would recommend using white potatoes.
- Olive oil – see substitution notes above.
- Chili powder – paprika or cayenne pepper powder are great substitutes for chili powder.
- Oregano – see substitution notes above.
- Parsley – cilantro will also work in place of parsley as a garnish for the fries.
- Salt – to taste.
How to make Greek fries
Step 1: Marinade the chicken.
Marinade the chicken in olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, oregano, salt and pepper.
Step 2: Bake the fries.
Cut the potatoes into fries, rinse and dry, then bake in the oven.
Step 3: Cook the chicken.
Brown the chicken in a skillet until cooked through.
Step 4: Prepare any toppings of your choice.
Step 5: Sprinkle on the cheese.
Add mozzarella to the fries and bake until the cheese has melted.
Step 6: Serve and enjoy!
Add the chicken and any toppings to the baked fries, then dig in!
Best toppings for Greek fries
The best part of these gyro fries are the toppings! Use as many toppings as you like and feel free to get creative with what you add on top. These are some of my favourite toppings:
- Veggies: Red onion, tomato, cucumber, lettuce, bell peppers or kalamata olives
- Spices: Parsley, basil, dill
- Sauces: Tzatziki, hummus, garlic mayo, lemon dill sauce
Frequently Asked Questions
This recipe has 396 calories per serving and is healthier than the options you’d get at a restaurant or takeout spot since the fries are oven-baked, not fried. If you want to cut down on calories even further, go easy on the toppings.
I like adding tzatziki and hummus to my Greek fries, but you could try out different sauces like a mayo aioli using mayo, garlic and lemon juice, or even a lemon dill sauce.
There are a few tricks to get super crispy fries. Cut the potatoes into long and evenly-cut thin fries, and soak them in cold water for at least 30 minutes. You can even cut and soak them the night before, which is a great option for ingredient prep! You’ll also want to flip the fries halfway through the cooking time, so they cook nice and crispy all the way around.
You can definitely make these gyros fries vegetarian-friendly! Swap out the chicken for vegetables for a yummy meat-free meal idea. You could even marinate some bell peppers and other veggies in the Greek-inspired marinade, so you’re still getting all those good flavours on your fries.
Storing and reheating
If you plan on enjoying these Greek fries throughout the week, I’d recommend storing the chicken, fries and toppings separately. This will ensure that everything stays as fresh as possible. Store everything in the fridge for 4 to 5 days.
To reheat the fries and get them nice and crispy ahead, reheat them in the oven for 5 to 10 minutes at 450° Fahrenheit. While the fries and in the oven, sprinkle some water over top of the chicken and microwave for 1 to 2 minutes, then assemble your fries with all your favourite toppings. Easy-peasy!
Freezing the chicken
While you can’t freeze your gyro fries after they’ve been assembled, you can freeze the chicken either raw and marinated or cooked in glass bowls or Ziploc bags for up to 3 months. Let the chicken defrost in the fridge overnight, then cook or reheat as normal. You can use the chicken to make a fresh batch of Greek fries or any other recipe of your choice!
