Bangkok Garden

We were recently invited to try the Coconut Cool Down tasting menu (available only until Sept. 30!) at Bangkok Garden, one of Toronto’s oldest Thai restaurants located in a historic building near Ryerson University and the Eaton Centre. Located at 18 Elm St., the restaurant has been around for 30 years and is hailed as bringing authentic Thai culture, food and flavours to the downtown area!

Bangkok Garden

Housed in a historical building, Bangkok Garden is one of four Thai restaurants in Toronto to be awarded the Thai Select Premium designation from the Thai Consulate, recognizing the authenticity of the food. Everything is house made, and based on the Thai principle of balancing the five tastes. The restaurant also manages to cater to many dietary restrictions.

Bangkok Garden

Bangkok Garden is located in a landmark historic building designed by Gordon & Helliwell Architects, the same architects who designed Old City Hall, St. Paul’s Anglican Church and Casa Loma. They share a space with the Elmwood spa, and both are located beside the Chelsea Eaton hotel.

All decor in the space has been imported from Thailand, from the teak used in the floor, to the decorative temple bells, and several other Thai artifacts. There is a koi pond located in the floor of the restaurant as you walk from the front bar/lounge area to the back dining area and the building has even been blessed by Thai monks upon opening 30 years ago.

We had such a unique experience, and could tell that this restaurant remains a special landmark in Toronto’s Thai history. The flavours felt carefully cultivated, the service extraordinary and the prices are reasonable. We would have liked to see a few more combos on the menu, but this is not a cheap takeout restaurant. If you want sit-down, quality and authentic Thai cuisine, this is the place!

Check out to see what we were treated to from Bangkok Garden – you’re going to be drooling over these tasting menu items!
