Okay, so do I ever have an amazing holiday appetizer idea to share with you today, and it’s brought to you by my FAVE EVER veggie of all time: mushrooms!!!
I have an annual two-part guest-blogging series on the Mushrooms Canada blog where I share fun, creative ways to cook mushrooms. In May I shared my Caprese Stuffed Portobello Mushrooms, and this time it’s a twist on a family favourite from my childhood.
I’m currently in the middle of winding down for the holiday season so please bear with me as I share less recipes than usual over the next couple weeks for the holiday break.
I just realized a couple weeks ago when looking at my calendar that I have not had a significant period of time off work for about a year now!
Yes, the last time I took a break from work was last Christmas.
And here I am at the end of the year finding myself burning out and needing to take a few days away from the computer. 🙁 Aren’t we are over-exhausted right now?
But without further ado, let me regale you with a few tales from many Christmases ago – back when my brother and I were stuffing our faces with sweet and spicy meatballs.
Back in the day my grandma and popa used to host the most EPIC Christmas parties in their tiny little house that faced the main street where an annual Christmas parade used to be.
The Stoney Creek Christmas Parade was always the first or second Saturday of every December. All the loud firetrucks and floats came booming down the street in the early afternoon December sun, and my brother and I were bundled up to the nines in all our snow gear with hot chocolate in our hands.
Then at night: party time.
All my older cool cousins who I idolized came, and people got silly.
Bottles opened, egg nog was on the table, along with pretty much endless amounts of handheld appetizers, chips and dip, salsas and my Popa Ray’s homemade chili.
Back then I had no clue why the adults were having so much fun (umm, alcohol, duh!), but I would grab my little paper plate and stock it full of goodies, the most coveted of which were the sweet and spicy BBQ meatballs.
My little brother Troy (who had a propensity for eating too much and would spend half of the night in the bathroom) would probably up to about half the entire platter of these meatballs.
In his defence, they were SO good.
We have much smaller scale family parties now that I’ve grown up and most of my “cool” cousins have since had their own children, but these meatballs always bring back memories of those fun, carefree times in my life and remind me of what the holidays are really about. Great gatherings, and fantastic food.
I like to think I have made a classic even better by stuffing them with cheese and blending the beef with mushrooms – these are seriously one of my new faves, and something I’ll be bringing to Christmas dinner this year.
Hosted by, you guessed it, one of the cool cousins. 😉
