Bison, Beef and Turkey Burger Sliders

Don’t these Bison, Beef and Turkey Burger Sliders just look perfect for a backyard BBQ party? Sliders are my new favourite summer appetizer. They’re relatively easy to make, and everyone gets to have a little variety on their plates.

Most grocery stores sell small burger buns, and hopefully you won’t have to shop around too much for these. We got ours at a Loblaws store, their PC brand mini sesame buns.

These burgers have three different kinds of cheese: Monterey Jack, cheddar and Swiss Emmental cheese. They also use three different kinds of meat: turkey, bison and beef. You can definitely switch things up and make sliders with just about any protein or toppings, but I tried to use combinations that are popular favourites.

While Nathalie and I are definitely fans of the conventional cheeseburger, we also love unorthodox and trendy toppings such as avocado, caramelized onions, sprouts, kale and portobello mushrooms. It’s really up to you and your tastebuds to decide which you’d like to include on your burger!

If you’ve never had bison before, then you’re in for a real treat. This meat is a bit gamey tasting, and the meat is so tender and delicate that they are easy to overcook. My little brother said his favourite were the bison sliders, which definitely have a unique taste with the caramelized onions and portobello mushrooms!

The recipe we used for each kind of meat is one my mom makes at home, and soooo good and simple. You don’t need to season your burger much for amazing flavour. Remember, it’s all about letting the meat shine. We also use our Sriracha Ketchup and Chipotle Mayo recipes on these burgers.

Instructions
  1. Preheat the BBQ or frying pan at med-high heat. Cut cheese slices into small squares the size of the slider buns.
  2. Mix burgers mixture together and form into small patties, using one of the buns to measure what size the patty should be, Your patty should be slightly larger than the bun since it will shrink during cooking.
  3. Meanwhile, heat 1 tbsp olive oil on med-high heat and throw in about a cup of sliced yellow onion, cooking for about 10 minutes to caramelize them. About 7 minutes into cooking time, add mushrooms and season with salt and pepper. Reserve mixture for Bison burgers.
  4. Brush each side of each burger patty with olive oil and place on grill or in frying pan, cooking on each side for 3-4 min. Flip and cook for same amount of time on other side. At the same time, broil buns in the oven or on top rack of BBQ to toast them slightly.
  5. Top each burger with toppings and condiments listed above and enjoy!!
